About Carlton Electric:
Carlton Electric is a leading Denver-based commercial/industrial electrical contractor dedicated to delivering high-quality projects with a field-first mindset. We are in business to provide positive growth and energy to our people, our industry and our community and our core values guide everything we do: Be Safe, Be a Good Person, Do the Right Thing, Strive for Excellence, Whatever It Takes, and Take Responsibility and Own It.
We are seeking a Project Engineer to join our project management team. This is where a career in electrical project management starts. Whether you are coming in from the field or have just finished a construction management or engineering degree, you will learn how commercial electrical projects are built and managed from the inside. As a Project Engineer, you keep information moving between the office and the field—RFIs, submittals, drawings, material, and cost data—and work closely with Project Managers, Assistant Project Managers, and Foremen to keep jobs organized, current, and on track.
The right fit for this position:
The ideal Project Engineer is organized, curious, and quick to follow through. This person is detail-oriented, communicates clearly in writing and in person, and is eager to learn Carlton’s CP3 process, the NEC, and our project tools. The right candidate takes ownership of the details, makes sure the field is always building from current information, flags risks early, and builds strong working relationships with Foremen, Project Managers, customers, and vendors. Most importantly, they want to grow and see this role as the first step on Carlton’s Project Management career path from Project Engineer to Assistant Project Manager, Project Manager I, and beyond.
Responsibilities:
- Exemplify the Carlton Core – purpose and core values: Be Safe, Be a Good Person, Do the Right Thing, Strive for Excellence, Whatever It Takes, and Take Responsibility and Own It.
- Support project startup and the bid turnover from estimating through Carlton’s CP3 process: review the proposal and project requirements, set up the job in Spectrum and Sparc, build the job information sheet and site map, set up the RFI, change order, and submittal logs, and build the submittal log with lead times.
- Help set up phase codes and make sure everyone on the job charges time to the correct one.
- Review drawings, specifications, and contract documents; every conflict or scope gap becomes an RFI.
- Write and submit RFIs from field questions, keep the RFI log current, and get responses to the Foreman the same day they come back.
- Take responsibility for submittals: prepare them, maintain the submittal log, and make sure the Foreman can verify every delivery against approved submittals.
- Keep current drawing sets, RFI responses, and change orders posted in Bluebeam Studio so the field always builds from the current set.
- Take meeting minutes, manage project correspondence, and follow up on every action item the job owns.
- Perform material takeoffs, write commodity purchase orders from the estimate with the PM and APM, and track procurement and deliveries against the schedule.
- Help keep purchase orders and subcontracts current with change orders.
- Prepare takeoffs for change orders and small quotes so the APM or PM can price them.
- Assist with monthly billing by the 20th/25th, including backup and substantiation, and with the monthly cost-to-complete (CTC).
- Track installed quantities and hours against the Playbook budget, and flag any risk, delay, or cost impact early.
- Assist the PM and APM with the project schedule and the schedule of values.
- Help obtain the proper electrical permit for each job’s jurisdiction and learn its permitting process and allowed wiring methods.
- Help keep the project compliant with the NEC, NFPA, and project specifications, and bring engineering questions to the APM or PM.
- Help with site-specific safety plans and project kickoff meetings; follow OSHA, NFPA 70E, and Carlton safety requirements.
- Attend field walks and project meetings to verify progress and help resolve technical and constructability issues.
- Assist the Foreman with QA/QC, field testing, and verification, and compile as-built data.
- Compile closeout documentation and the closeout package for APM and PM review: final as-builts, test records, panel schedules, O&M manuals, and owner stock transmittals. Close out the job with vendors.
- Before project completion, help the PM introduce Carlton’s service team to the owner so the relationship continues after turnover.
- Build trust with customers and maintain strong working relationships with the GC, owner, vendors, and the entire project team.
- Participate in Project Engineer meetings and help improve Carlton’s project standards, processes, Bluebeam, and Open Space.
- Perform additional project support duties as assigned.
